14 Ways to Stay Safe This Harvest
As the busy harvest season approaches, it’s vital to keep safety front of mind

As the busy harvest season approaches, it’s vital to keep safety front of mind. Long hours, heavy machinery, and high-pressure deadlines create a perfect storm for accidents on farms – but with the right steps, they can be avoided.

At this year’s Cereals event (11–12 June at Heath Farm, Leadenham), health and safety experts from CXCS will be on Stand 229, sharing practical, low-cost ways to help protect farmers, families, and workers this harvest season.

Rhiannon Wilson, Health & Safety Adviser at CXCS, offers 14 practical tips to help farms run safely and smoothly during this high-risk time:

  1. Daily Machinery Checks – Inspect vehicles every day, check brakes, lights, indicators, and report defects immediately.
  2. Follow the ‘Safe Stop’ Procedure – Handbrake on, controls in neutral, power off, key removed – every time you leave the cab.
  3. Proper Training – Ensure everyone using machinery is trained, competent, and confident – including seasonal staff and students.
  4. In-Cab Safety – Keep a first-aid kit and a visible notice to alert others when working under machinery.
  5. Farm Maps – Provide visitors and new workers with a map showing hazards like overhead power lines and livestock areas.
  6. Lone Working Protocols – Carry charged phones, use the what3words app, and check in regularly.
  7. Road Safety – Move large equipment considerately, use escorts where needed, and follow the Highway Code.
  8. Power Line Awareness – Know the locations of power lines. In an emergency, stay in the cab and call 105.
  9. Visibility – Wear hi-vis clothing and ensure all machine lights are clean and functional.
  10. Fire Prevention – Keep machinery clean, carry water bowsers, and never ignore overheating engines.
  11. Child Safety – Keep children away from working areas and educate them about farm dangers.
  12. Mental Health Matters – Fatigue increases risk. Take breaks, talk openly, and look out for each other.
  13. Stay Cool and Hydrated – Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing.
  14. Tidy Up Pre-Harvest – Clear trip hazards and prune low branches to improve safety and visibility.

Come and talk to the CXCS team on stand 229 about inexpensive ways to improve safety on your farm.
