Bayer’s Dekalb OSR portfolio meets grower needs
Providing the best defence against cabbage stem flea beetles is one of the five key oilseed rape priorities that form the focus of Dekalb’s 2020 variety portfolio.
The 18-strong portfolio includes six new and five recently-introduced varieties building on the strength of established grower favourites, DK Extrovert, DK Exalte, DK Imperial CL and V316OL to meet today’s needs for reliability and dependability as much as performance.
All have the programme’s trademark vigorous establishment and pioneering pod shatter resistance traits together with particular genetic strengths giving the least overall risk, extra insurance against turnip yellows virus, the most reliable Clearfield performance and added-value from HOLL growing as well as the best available CSFB defence.
“Breakthrough minimum risk variety, DK Exstar is widely available for the first time this season as the natural successor to DK Extrovert and DK Exalte,” explains Bayer campaign manager, Edward Hagues.
“It combines class-leading 8+ ratings for light leaf spot, phoma, lodging resistance and stem stiffness with the rapid autumn development associated with reduced flea beetle damage. Together these make for the greatest reliability and agronomic flexibility. Add the fact that it’s the lead variety in our enhanced Establishment Scheme for 2020 and DK Exstar really does live up to its least risk OSR billing.”
Providing added genetic defence against flea beetle for the coming season is the outstanding new fast developer, DK Extremus with its combination of rapid autumn development and early spring regrowth – a trait recognised as restricting larval damage, in particular. Despite being notably early maturing, it performed on a par with leading Recommended List varieties at the top of the 2019 NIABTAG trial series.
“Our exciting 2020 portfolio includes the first varieties carrying Turnip Yellows Virus resistance in trusted high reliability Dekalb backgrounds,” Mr Hagues points out. “DK Expectation stands out here as the leading East/West RL Candidate, and DK Excited adds even faster autumn development to an equally strong agronomic package.
“DK Imprint CL also heralds a new generation of Clearfield performance and reliability. As well as raising the bar in all-round agronomic strength, the variety was the highest yielder of all in last year’s NIABTAG Clearfield performance trials. Anyone keen on the Clearfield system is going to want to try this variety.
“Finally, in V367OL, we have the natural successor to V316OL in the added-value High Oleic, Low Linolenic (HOLL) sector, boasting a higher output than the former RL leader and a stronger agronomic package.”
Recommended all-rounder, DK Exsteel also joins the Dekalb portfolio for the first time as a notably low risk variety for its strength-in-depth, with the fastest autumn and earliest spring developer, DK Expedient highlighted as a further choice for those wanting the genetics best placed to withstand cabbage stem flea beetle.
New to the range for 2020 too is DK Plastic with double phoma resistance as well as clubroot resistance; DK Impressario CL as another valuable string to the Clearfield bow; and V353OL providing an extra HOLL-growing option.
