The EU-funded Horizon 2020 project NOMAD brings together engineers, scientists and other key stakeholders dedicated to harnessing the generation of low-carbon fertilisers from digestate from various organic sources (animal waste, crop and food waste, and municipal wastewater). They have designed and built a mobile solution that processes digestate to recover nutrient compounds in a compact form. The technology is also being tested to reduce antibiotic residues. The system consists of two 40-foot trailers that can be transported to serve multiple biogas plants, sharing costs to improve the economics of the process. For smaller biogas plants, this makes biofertilizer management much more attractive.
