Ben Knight manages one of the most progressive and forward-thinking farms in the West Midlands. Coming from an agricultural background, Ben combines his technical agronomic knowledge with a passion for strip tillage establishment. He advocates reduced tillage practices to improve soil and plant health and is continually running trials to fine tune techniques, in order to gain a better understanding of what can be achieved through strip tillage. Ben is striving for a more sustainable approach to farming, that encompasses reduced chemical reliance, soil preservation and maximising financial margins.
Ben Knight, Farm manager of Springfield Farms, talks about how strip tillage could be the answer for future proofing arable enterprises as we move forward into uncertain times. Sharing his challenges and recent developments as a Mzuri trial farm, Ben will explain how strip tillage has facilitated improved weed control and reduced dependency on chemistry, whilst cutting expenditure and improving soil structure thanks to single pass establishment. Having converted to a strip tillage system eight years ago, Springfield Farm has gone from being unproductive business, which was haunted by a heavy weed burden and rising costs, to a sustainable and efficient enterprise.
