David grew up around his father's land drainage business, John Jones Land Drainage, based in Warwickshire. He left school at 15 to work on his neighbour's arable farm as the main tractor driver and digger operator. At 19, he completed an intensive machinery repair course then onto work at R Hill & Son, a progressive arable farm. In 1996, David went back to the family business, a 650ha arable unit. Since then, the family farm has progressed to 1100ha producing high quality and yielding combinable crops. David has developed a cultivation and crop rotation suited to their very variable soil types. Land drainage and ditching maintenance has been a core of this planning, along with good machine choice, after assessing soil structure and depths of cultivations required. David has worked closely with Case IH global/UK and also with Vaderstad for over 20 years sharing and learning experience. In 2020, David was awarded a Royal Agricultural Society Award for practice and development in agriculture.
