John Pawsey farms 650 hectares in Suffolk near to Bury St Edmunds and is the Director of Shimpling Park Farms Limited. John started converting the farm to organic production in 1999 having had concerns about the financial resilience of the business, degradation in soil health and declining wildlife species on the farm. Since then the business has diversified in terms of crops grown, engaged with the marketing of those crops with end users, reintroduced grazing animals and has implemented longer rotations with the result of increasing soil health, halting and in some cases reversing the decline in wildlife species at Shimpling. John now farms a further 1,110 hectares organically for neighbouring farmers with comparable results. As well as farming Shimpling Park Farms has repurposed former farm buildings to rent out to local businesses, has three wood chip boilers using wood from the farm to heat domestic and commercial properties and imports and sells novel machinery used in agroecological systems.
