Professor of Crop Genetics, John Innes Centre

Steven Penfield is Professor of Crop Genetics at the John Innes Centre. His work addresses problems in winter oilseed rape cultivation, including addressing factors behind the current decline in oilseed rape cultivation in the UK. The research covers key areas such as the impact of the ban on neonicotinamides and rise of the cabbage stem flea beetle, and understanding why yields can be so variable between years. By understanding how weather and climate impacts yield, we hope to direct breeding of more reliable varieties.
